Literacy
We have been finding the main idea of reading passages, and using evidence from the text to support our choices of main ideas in reading. As a science tie-in, we are reading about the ancient volcano, Mt. Vesuvius, and the city of Pompeii.
In writing, we are writing persuasive essays using complete sentences and watching out for run on sentences. As a class, we wrote a letter to the cafeteria staff asking them to make changes to their menu. We also gave our opinions about a proposed ban on Facebook users under the age of 18. Our latest persuasive essays are counter-arguments to people who do not believe in Santa Claus. According to Mrs. Holloway's Fourth Grade class, there really are flying reindeer, and there seems to be a widespread belief in magic dust that helps Santa visit the good children in one night.
Santa Claus is Real
by Lilyan T.
If Santa was not real, then how do we get presents under the tree and fruit and candy in our stockings? Also, because my Daddy told me that he saw Santa, and my Grandpa saw Santa Claus, I believe. I haven't seen Santa, but I believe my Daddy.
There are such a thing as flying reindeer. Because I saw one on TV and my favorite show. Then my Grandpa told me he saw them one time when he was little. Then I saw one in my backyard. Then I saw one in the air.
Santa lives in the North Pole, because my Daddy told me. Because he went there. But he only has a t-shirt to wear, so he can't live there. Santa has heat and has covers and a bed to get warm in.
Santa can slow down the time and give all the little kids in the world gifts. Sometimes I can hear Santa at night. I can see a shadow on the wall from my room, and I can hear the reindeer on the roof at night.
This is why I know Santa is real.
